The country of the Camino has a lot to offer when it comes to trekking, hiking and long distance walking. Costa del Sol is mostly known for its tourism, but there are lots of good trekking options in close proximity to our base camp Cabo Roig south of Alicante
One particularly nice route is the peninsula of Rincón de San Ginés to the east of Cartagena. Close to Portman there is a famous route around Monte de las Cenizas which offers magnificent views of mountains, forest and the sea – but also historical sites with ruins of fortifications – as well as an ancient roman road that in parts is very well preserved.
The trip is around 10 km and moderately challenging – it is achieavable for most hikers.
The best place to start the trip is next to the bar called “La Cubana” where there is also a free parking. From the parking at La Cubana, you walk straight up on to the route that leads you to a fortification. From there, the path becomes increasingly steep, taking you through forests with a big ravine on the left side. It is strongly adviced to focus on the route when ascending.
Eventually you will reach the top of the mountain where you will find more ruins and a big plateau with second world war canons and panoramic views. This is a perfect place to pause and breathe, perhaps consume a sandwhich or whatever you prefer.
On the way down, you will walk on the remains an ancient roman road for a couple of kilometers before arriving back at La Cubana. It is fascinating to think about how people have been walking this road for more than 2000 years in the middle of the mountains.
This is probably one of the best day trips if you are based in Cabo Roig and have access to a car. This is a route that we wlll certainly revisit!
